LIGHTING

Stage Lighting

Stage lighting is the discipline that gives visual form to a live show: it sets the mood, directs the audience’s eye and follows the rhythm of the performance. This Instalia section brings together news from that specific territory: moving heads, beam, spot and wash fixtures, LED battens and panels, consoles and control protocols, and the projects of the companies lighting concerts, tours, theatres and shows. It is distinct from Professional Lighting, the general hub for the field, and from the broader Event Lighting: here the focus is the stage and what happens on it.

Other sections every lighting design intersects with, from the general hub for the field to its application at events and the equipment that makes it possible.

The field’s hub: news, companies and lighting technology across every use.

The same technology applied to the event as a whole, on stage and off.

The equipment piece by piece: fixtures, consoles, stands and accessories.

Lighting technology for stages and live shows

A stage lighting plot is built by function. Front light handles the visibility of the performers; backlight separates the figure from the background; side light gives volume, and aerial beams draw the space when there is haze. Each function calls for a type of fixture: spot for gobos and projection, wash to cover surfaces, beam for the tight shaft, and LED battens or panels for backdrops and quick colour changes.

On top comes control. Consoles govern hundreds of fixtures over DMX or over network — Art-Net, sACN — and store the show in cues, so that each state fires with the precision live work demands, synchronised with the sound and the video. On tour, real-world conditions are added: weight and rigging, power draw, IP protection outdoors and get-in times. It is the same technology seen in event lighting, but put at the service of a specific performance on a stage, with the lighting equipment chosen for it.
