Professional LED lighting covers the solid-state fixtures intended for technical use: performance, architecture, studio, retail and permanent installation. This Instalia section brings together news on that technology: LED engines and sources, fixtures and moving heads, battens and panels, drivers and power supply, intensity and colour control, and the projects of the companies that manufacture and distribute it. It does not deal with LED screens, video walls or dvLED — that is display, not lighting — and it is separate from Professional Lighting, the general hub for the field: here the organising criterion is LED technology itself.

LED technology applied to professional lighting
A professional LED fixture is defined by its light engine. Some are monochrome with calibrated white; others use additive mixing — RGBW, RGBAL, with lime or cyan added — that widens the reproducible gamut. From that come the figures that matter on a spec sheet: usable output, colour temperature, colour rendering index and consistency between units from the same batch, which is what stops two adjacent fixtures rendering differently.
The rest is control and electronics. Dimming is done by PWM at high frequencies so as not to beat with cameras, and management arrives via DMX, Art-Net, sACN or the proprietary protocols of the fixed installation. Compared with discharge sources, LED brings instant strike, dimming without filters, lower power draw and less heat load, which opens up rigs that would be unworkable with metal halide. Those advantages show up equally in stage lighting and in permanently installed lighting equipment.
