TRAINING
Sound Technician
The sound technician is the person who sets up and operates the audio chain: microphones and capture, console and mix, processing, amplification and system, both live and in the studio. This Instalia section follows what that role needs in order to work and progress: technical training, manufacturer courses and workshops, measurement and system alignment tools, and operating skills. It is distinct from Sound Courses, which gathers the discipline’s general training provision, and from Training and Seminars, the hub covering all training across the audiovisual sector.

Skills and technology for the sound technician's work
The trade rests on fundamentals that do not change with the equipment: how the signal behaves from the microphone to the loudspeaker, gain and level structure, equalisation and dynamics, and the relationship between the room and what reaches the listener. On that base sits the systems work: zoning, delays, alignment and measurement with analysis software so that coverage is even across the whole venue and not just at the mix position.
Live work adds operating under pressure and managing the trade’s background noise: soundchecks with short turnarounds, frequency coordination for wireless systems, digital audio networks, monitors and communication with the rest of the technical team. In the studio, capture, editing and mixing carry more weight. Manufacturer training and specialist workshops are today the usual route for updating those skills, alongside the formal provision gathered in Sound Courses and the news in Professional Sound.
