Architecture and technology in professional audio systems
Every professional audio system describes a chain. It starts at the sources — microphones, players, line inputs or network channels — and passes through a mixing and processing stage where gain, equalisation, dynamics, delays and limiting are set. From there the signal is distributed: previously over point-to-point analogue cabling, today increasingly over networked audio protocols such as Dante or AES67, which carry dozens of channels across the building’s own Ethernet infrastructure.
Amplification matches that signal to the loudspeakers, and the acoustic design decides how many are needed, where they are flown and what coverage they give. Control closes the chain: user interfaces, presets per scenario and remote supervision of each device’s status. Where the deployment is permanent we speak of installed systems; where it is rigged and struck, of live systems. Professional sound equipment makes up the individual pieces; the system is the way they are integrated, calibrated and maintained within complete audiovisual installations.
