Audio and lighting at Roquefort Société cellars have been renewed through an integrated solution developed by STE AUDIO alongside the Adam Hall Integrated Systems team. The project brings together professional sound, architectural lighting and automated control to turn the tour of the caves into an immersive experience.
The installation combines LD Systems loudspeakers, Cameo fixtures and the QUESTRA platform to coordinate the audio, lighting and automation scenes. The technology is discreetly built into the architecture of the caves so that sound, light and the natural setting read as a single narrative.
Audio and lighting at Roquefort Société cellars
In Aveyron, France, the Roquefort Société cellars welcome more than 100,000 visitors a year. Roquefort AOP blue cheese has been maturing in these natural caves for centuries.
To renew the visitor experience, the French integrator STE AUDIO worked with Adam Hall Integrated Systems on an audiovisual installation that brings together audio and lighting with centralised control. The system uses technology to explain the history of the caves, how the cheese is made, and the role of the Fleurines, the natural fissures that provide the ventilation and microclimate the maturing process depends on.
Audio in the Roquefort Société caves: sound as the narrative thread
For STE AUDIO, the sound system was never a conventional audio installation: it carries the whole visit, from the first moment of the route to the last. The loudspeakers were matched to each zone. LD Systems DQOR 3T installation models create an intimate, precise atmosphere along the opening stretch, while the larger-format DQOR 5T systems reinforce the sound under the wide vaults of the final section, where the staging reaches its high point. The system also uses LD Systems IPA 424 T + X-EDAI to run the audio installation.
The acoustic challenge was considerable: vaulted ceilings, long sightlines and stone surfaces on every side. Rather than fight those conditions, the team designed around them, refining loudspeaker positions, levels and DSP processing zone by zone so that the natural reverberation of the rock became part of the experience instead of a problem to be corrected.
Lighting in the Roquefort Société caves: light as a narrative language
The lighting design follows the same dramatic structure as the sound. Different colour temperatures, intensities and beam angles draw the eye towards the architectural features and create moments of pause along the route. The aim was to bring the heritage to life without overshadowing it: what visitors should remember is the beauty of the cave, not the technology lighting it.
The environmental conditions called for hard-wearing equipment: constant humidity of around 95%, temperatures close to 9°C and a saline atmosphere. The installed system combines Cameo DURA LINE 50 and 100 battens, which light pillars and vaults of up to eight metres evenly; ZENIT W300i fixtures for the Fleurines and the larger rock fissures; and DURA SPOT 60, 100 and 200 RGBW spotlights with IP67 protection, which pick out specific features almost imperceptibly.

QUESTRA, the brain that coordinates audio, light and automation
The whole system is managed through a Cameo DVC CUE paired with LD Systems’ QUESTRA software, which acts as the central control system. As each visit begins, QUESTRA simultaneously starts the music written for the route, triggers the corresponding lighting scenes and coordinates the timing sequences, GPIO commands, relays and audio transitions between zones in the background. Once the tour ends, the system returns automatically to its initial state, ready for the next group.
Instalia has already looked at what the QUESTRA platform brings to audiovisual integration, presented by Adam Hall Integrated Systems at ISE 2026 as a way of centralising the management of professional audio, lighting and automation systems.
For day-to-day use outside the guided tours, STE AUDIO also built a bespoke interface around two LD Systems QTP 8 touch panels, allowing staff to select specific scenarios — from the standard visit to occasions such as Christmas, Halloween or the French national day — without having to handle the technical complexity underneath.
A project of almost three months with the caves open throughout
The installation ran over almost three months in a heritage site that stayed open to the public at all times, which meant planning every phase of the work around the daily visits. Working with the support team at Adam Hall Integrated Systems and with Fabrice Bédouet, account manager for Integrated Systems in France, proved decisive in sustaining a project of this scale without interrupting activity on site.
For Lacombe, success is not measured by the technology installed but by the visitor forgetting it is there: if someone leaves the cave believing they have heard the rock itself breathing, the installation has done its job.
Audio and lighting for caves, museums and heritage sites
The approach to audio and lighting at Roquefort Société cellars is a useful reference for integrators working in show caves, museums, interpretation centres, monuments and immersive cultural routes. In these settings, the output of the loudspeakers or the fixtures is not the only criterion that matters: the technology has to respect the architecture, cope with demanding environmental conditions and stay visually integrated, as well as being coordinated through centralised platforms such as QUESTRA so that every scene plays back reliably on every visit.
